Derby
Breed: Hanoverian Warmblood | Age: 21 | Height: 16.3hh | Color: Bay
Hi! My name is Derby, and around the barn I’m known as the gentle giant and resident teddy bear. At 16.3 hands tall, I am the biggest guy at the barn, but my personality is calm, patient, and incredibly kind.
You’ll often see me serving as the demonstration horse during Equitation Club, where I help students learn everything from grooming and groundwork to riding basics. I enjoy the attention and take my job seriously, especially when it involves standing quietly while the kids learn.
I’m trained in both dressage and hunter, and when I decide to show off, I’m known for being a beautiful mover with plenty of spring. Most of the time, though, I prefer to practice what I call energy conservation. I’m not lazy, I’m just energy efficient. Sometimes I’ll even sneak in a little nap while the kids are learning.
I also have a unique begging technique. While most horses pin their ears when they’re annoyed, I sometimes do the exact opposite, pinning my ears back like a little dragon while asking for treats. Don’t let the “dragon ears” fool you though, I have a pretty great smile, especially when carrots or apples might be involved.
I’m also very curious, and I love to investigate your bracelets, watch, or anything dangling from your wrist. Someone has to make sure everyone at the barn is properly accessorized.
Derby is privately owned but generously shares his time with the students in our educational programs.
